Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
Making Tax Digital introduces digital record-keeping and reporting requirements for eligible sole traders and landlords. We help clients understand their start date, choose suitable arrangements and maintain the records needed throughout the year.
Clients outside MTD may still need an annual Self Assessment return. We assess this separately from MTD eligibility.
Frequently asked questions
When does Making Tax Digital for Income Tax apply?
Subject to exemptions, it applies from 6 April 2026 where qualifying income exceeded £50,000 in 2024/25; from 6 April 2027 where it exceeded £30,000 in 2025/26; and from 6 April 2028 where it exceeded £20,000 in 2026/27. Qualifying income is broadly gross self-employment and property income combined, before expenses. We check the detailed rules against your circumstances.
If I am outside MTD, do I still need a tax return?
Possibly. Self Assessment requirements are separate. Business profits, rental income, untaxed income or reportable gains can create an obligation. Being a company director alone does not automatically mean a return is required.
What expenses can I claim?
Allowable expenses depend on their purpose and the tax rules. They can include business travel, professional fees and appropriate business-use proportions of certain shared costs. Equipment and other capital expenditure may follow different rules. We review the actual expenditure rather than applying blanket claims.
When should I register for Self Assessment?
If you need to submit a return and are not already registered, you normally need to notify HMRC by 5 October following the tax year concerned. We can help check whether you need to register and which deadlines apply.
Can you advise on pension contributions?
We can consider the tax treatment and available relief within our accounting and tax work. Advice on choosing pension products or investments should be obtained from an appropriately authorised financial adviser.
